CHARGEBACK CORNER:  Advance Ship Notice

Chargebacks related to the advance ship notice (ASN) are sometimes a double-whammy:  not only does the vendor get a chargeback for the ASN, but also for the carton or pallet barcode label.

The relationship between the ASN electronic document and the carton or pallet barcode label is thus:  the UCC-128 barcode on the carton and pallet label is contained in the ASN.  So, when your carton or pallet is scanned at the distribution center, your trading partner is confirming the receipt of all the items packed in the carton or pallet as also represented in the ASN as being related to the UCC-128 barcode serial number scanned.  This is why it is necessary to ensure your ASN is sent at least 24 hours in advance of your shipment arriving at your trading partner's distribution center:  your trading partner needs the time to receive and process your ASN to do the UCC-128 barcode match-up during the scan-and-receive process.

If your ASN contains UCC-128 serial numbers not on the shipment, the shipment will appear short.  If your ASN does not contain a UCC-128 serial number that is on a carton or pallet label, an error will occur during the receive scanning by your trading partner.  In either case, a chargeback is likely to occur.
