Why Must My Company Comply?
We do things in life for two reasons:
Because we want to.
Because we have to.
Vendor compliance is one of those things you have to do if you want to sell your products to major corporations in industries such as health care, retail, and automotive manufacturing. It is simply not an option regardless of how big or how small a company you are.
Vendor compliance allows a customer to standardize how they conduct business with their vendors, which may number in the hundreds or thousands!
The costs associated with vendor compliance are often not considered when a vendor seeks to do business with the top echelon of their customer base. In other words, for example, selling goods to "mom-and-pop" stores is a whole lot easier than selling to any of the major retailers. However, just selling to "mom-and-pop" stores might limit growth and exposure of your company and the goods it produces. It is a trade-off that requires careful planning and dedication of people and technical resources.
It may be possible to negotiate a waiver on some or all compliance requirements for your first-time or first few orders. Companies do understand that compliance requires a financial investment in technologies by their vendors. Make sure that your waiver lists specifically the requirements to be waived, (i.e. all EDI transactions and carton barcode labels), and identifies the timeframe for the waiver (i.e. the first 4 orders, all orders in the first 6 months). Make sure the waiver is signed by a person at your customer's company with the authority to do so, such as the buyer, the vendor compliance manager, an information technology manager, or an accounting manager - it might even be appropriate for more than one person to sign the waiver based on the different departments involved in the requirements being waived.
